چکیده

It has been assumed for a long time that the ionization of atoms by ions must in one form or another play an important r6le in the phenomena of gas discharges. This assumption found its mathematical expression in the well-known theory of Townsend. Only recently, however, have the elementary effects of the ionization by ions been experimentally investigated. The ionization of noble gas atoms by alkali ions was studied in particular and a number of important results have been arrived at by R. M. Sutton,' R. M. Sutton and J. C. Mouzon2 and 0. Beeck.3 The points which are essential for our considerations may be stated roughly as follows. Denote the masses of the impinging ion and the target gas atom by m and M, respectively. With the auxiliary condition that the energy of the impinging ion be kept constant

Calculation of the total cross section for the ionization of H, He, Ne and Ar atoms by bare ions at the high energy range

In the present work, the total cross-section for the ionization of  H, He, Ne and Ar atoms by +He2+ ، H+ ، Li3 ions has been calculated. In these calculations, a binary encounter approximation in the form of a two-body process between projectile ions and atomic electrons at the high energy range has been implemented. In order to enter the nuclear role of the target atom, the atomic electron vel...

Photoionization of helium nanodroplets doped with rare gas atoms.

Photoionization of He droplets doped with rare gas atoms (Rg=Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) was studied by time-of-flight mass spectrometry, utilizing synchrotron radiation from the Advanced Light Source from 10 to 30 eV. High resolution mass spectra were obtained at selected photon energies, and photoion yield curves were measured for several ion masses (or ranges of ion masses) over a wide range of phot...

Secondary threshold laws for multiple ionization of atoms

We propose a physical mechanism that leads to the emergence of secondary threshold laws in processes of multiple ionization of atoms. We argue that the removal of n electrons sn.2d from a many-electron atom may proceed via intermediate resonant states of the corresponding doubly charged ion. For atoms such as rare gases, the density of such resonances in the vicinity of subsequent ionization th...

Calculations of Strong Field Multiphoton Processes in Alkali Metal Atoms

The development of a new class of laser systems, capable of producing intense radiation in the mid-infrared (MIR) regime (photon energies between 0.3 and 0.4 eV), opens the possibility of observing multiphoton processes in a new class of systems with lower ionization potentials than those previously studied. Of particular interest are the alkali metal atoms, which are true one-(valence)-electro...

Chemistry in one dimension.

We report benchmark results for one-dimensional (1D) atomic and molecular systems interacting via the Coulomb operator |x|(-1). Using various wavefunction-type approaches, such as Hartree-Fock theory, second- and third-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory and explicitly correlated calculations, we study the ground state of atoms with up to ten electrons as well as small diatomic and triatom...
